The Kootenai Wildlife Refuge in winter

The Kootenai Wildlife Refuge is a beautiful spot, even in the colder winter months, covered in snow.

If you want to go on a road trip and find a beautiful spot to enjoy North Idaho’s beautiful wildlife, take a quick road trip to the Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge.

The 2,774 acre refuge (which was established in 1964) is just 5 miles east of Bonners Ferry, and 20 miles south of the Canadian border. You can find a variety of wildlife inhabiting this beautiful refuge, including moose, deer, bear, bald eagles and mallards.

The refuge also offers a great opportunity to take in the beauty of the land from the comfort of your car. During daylight hours, there is a road that you can drive with your car to see the beautiful scenery. In the winter months, the road is closed to traffic, but open to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing!
