Why does Coeur D Alene have a French name?
Coeur d’Alene was named after the Coeur d’Alene Tribe resided in northern Idaho since the early 19th century. This name was given to them by French trappers and traders that had made their way into the area during that time.
In French, Cœur D’alène means heart of an awl, which is a tool used to punch holes into materials.
