Railroad Crossing

There’s a reason there are *so* many trains in Bonner County…

Even though we call Bonner County home, there are lots of fun historical facts that most people probably wouldn’t know. We gathered some of our favorite ones in the list below:

  1. Transcontinental Railroads: Bonner County is the only place in America where the three great transcontinental railroads (Great Northern, Northern Pacific and Canadian Pacific) all cross.
  2. Not too shabby: Bonner County has an area of about 17,500 square miles.
  3. Christmas Trees Galore! In 1971, about 88,000 Christmas trees were planted in Bonner County.
  4. The old Fairgrounds location: Before being leased to the Museum, Lakeview Park was used as the Bonner County Fairgrounds.
  5. Idaho’s largest city in WWII: During World War Two, Farragut Naval Training Station was the largest city in Idaho with a population of about 42,000 people.
  6. Commercial fishing: In the 1920s, ’30s and ’40s, white fish and kokanee were commercially fished in Lake Pend Oreille.
